Career In IRAQ

Iraq, officially known as the Republic of Iraq, stands as a nation in the region of West Asia. Turkey borders it to the north, while Iran lies to the east.

To the southeast, the Persian Gulf and Kuwait flank it, and to the south, it shares borders with Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Jordan is situated to the southwest, and Syria lies to the west. Baghdad serves as both the capital and the largest city of the country.

The people of Iraq form a diverse population, including Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen, Assyrians, Armenians, Yazidis, Mandaeans, Persians, and Shabakis. They follow various religions, predominantly Islam, but also encompassing Christianity, Yazidism, Mandaeism, Yarsanism, and Zoroastrianism.

Arabic and Kurdish are the official languages, with Turkish (Turkmen), Suret (Assyrian), and Armenian also recognized in specific regions.

The fertile alluvial plains of Mesopotamia, nestled between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, were home to some of the earliest civilizations in the world, such as Sumer, Akkad, and Assyria, dating back to the 6th millennium BC.

Mesopotamia earned its reputation as a “Cradle of Civilization,” responsible for remarkable inventions, including writing systems, mathematics, timekeeping, calendars, astrology, and legal codes.

With the Muslim conquest, Baghdad rose as the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate during the Islamic Golden Age.

It flourished as a significant cultural and intellectual hub, renowned for its academic institutions, notably the House of Wisdom.

However, the city’s prosperity was marred by the Mongol Empire’s destruction during the siege of Baghdad in 1258, leading to centuries of decline, plague outbreaks, and the rise and fall of multiple empires.

The origins of modern Iraq trace back to the establishment of the British Mandate for Mesopotamia in 1920, under the League of Nations, combining three former Ottoman vilayets.

Subsequently, a British-supported Kingdom emerged in 1921, ruled by Faisal I of Iraq. The country gained independence from the UK in 1932, becoming the Hashemite Kingdom of Iraq.

In 1958, the monarchy was overthrown, and Iraq transformed into a republic. The Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party, under leaders Ahmad Hassan al-Bakr and Saddam Hussein, held power from 1968 until 2003, turning Iraq into a one-party state.

The nation engaged in a prolonged and devastating war with Iran from 1980 to 1988, followed by an invasion of Kuwait in 1990, leading to global condemnation and an international coalition’s military campaign to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait.
